Dejana Backo’s journey began with questions about her unique condition as a child, but as she matured, she embraced her body and its capabilities. Despite being born without upper limbs, she has excelled as both an artist and an athlete, recently reaching new heights by becoming a wife and mother.
Born in Novi Sad on December 9, 1994, Dejana’s early curiosity about her physical differences evolved into a resilient determination to pursue her passions. She joined the Society of Mouth and Foot Painters at the age of nine, igniting her artistic talents. After completing her studies at the Design Art School and the Academy of Fine Arts in Novi Sad, she exhibited her work across the Balkans.
Known as the “girl with wings,” Dejana has become a symbol of empowerment in Serbia. Despite her physical challenges, she achieved remarkable success in sports, becoming a world champion in para taekwondo in 2019, a groundbreaking accomplishment for Serbia. In February 2023, Dejana celebrated another milestone as she welcomed her first child.
Her decision to prioritize this new chapter meant missing the Paralympic Games in 2024, but she remains committed to sharing her message of resilience through social media.
