Amanda Killen and her partner, Phil, found themselves in search of an adoptive dog one fateful day when they stumbled upon Sakari, a husky who had experienced her fair share of hardships. Sakari had spent the majority of her life confined within a cramped kennel alongside forty other canines, deprived of the simple pleasures offered by the great outdoors.
“Phil and I visited this individual who was seeking new homes for a few canines, as we wished to welcome an older dog into our household,” Killen shared with The Dodo, an animal-focused channel. “We had no inkling of what awaited us.”
Upon reaching Sakari’s previous abode in December 2021, it came to light that the breeder who owned Sakari was already under investigation by the New Brunswick Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Fortunately, soon after Amanda and Phil’s visit, all the remaining dogs were successfully rescued.
Out of the rescued canines, Sakari stood out. As soon as they encountered her, Sakari approached them with a gentle and affectionate demeanor, gracefully reclining at their feet. Killen and Phil instantly knew that they had discovered the companion they had been tirelessly searching for.
While initially timid and apprehensive, Sakari developed deep emotions for Amanda and Phil. Consequently, they made the decision to bring her into their home, and Sakari willingly hopped into their vehicle. Right from the beginning, Sakari showered them with love and placed her unwavering trust in them.
However, transitioning to her new home presented Sakari with certain challenges. She displayed sensitivity towards alterations in her surroundings, no matter how minor, such as the rearrangement of furniture. Additionally, she felt uneasy in the presence of loud noises and sudden movements, particularly when unfamiliar adults were involved. Nevertheless, she got along marvelously with children and other animals, exhibiting a special affinity for caring for a newborn within the family.
Sakari held two profound loves in her life: her owner and snow. She swiftly formed a bond with Phil and sought solace in his presence. The shared passion between them revolved around playing in the snow, with Sakari thoroughly savoring the moments when Phil enveloped her in the chilling embrace of the frozen flakes during their outdoor escapades.
“One day, Phil took it upon himself to sprinkle snow on her. She simply lay there, prompting him to continue burying her!” Killen recounted. “I have a feeling she would have stayed there all day.”
Sadly, the New Brunswick winter fell short of Sakari’s snowfall expectations, impeding Phil’s ability to construct any more snow forts for her. Nonetheless, Sakari cherished every single moment spent in the snow, regardless of its scarcity.
Her life overflowed with love, snuggles, treats, and the freedom to explore their enclosed yard. Her favorite spot involved nestling in her bed tucked away behind the sofa, remaining close to her human companions while safely avoiding foot traffic.
Sakari’s transformation from her days in the breeding facility proved to be nothing short of extraordinary. This astounding metamorphosis was made possible through the unwavering commitment, patience, and the ardent love demonstrated by her devoted guardians. Rescuing dogs can present obstacles, including the development of destructive tendencies or severe separation anxiety.
But the affection that blossoms when these difficulties are surmounted is an immensely gratifying encounter. Sakari had ultimately discovered the existence she merited, one brimming with kinship, adoration, and, naturally, an abundance of snow.
